2015 Nissan Cup

Sanford and Son RC headed out to AAA Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, CA this past weekend for the 2015 Nissan Cup race. We showed up on Friday to help set up the track. We were hoping to get some practice in, but we got a late start on the track build, and it was dark by the time we finished. We headed to the hotel to get some rest.

We showed up to the track on Saturday morning with batteries charged, and got plenty of practice time in. We also had time to check out the Nissan car show, and watch a couple of laps of racing by the full-size Nissan enthusiasts.

I had raced only a couple of on-road club races in my life, and this would be my first big on-road race since I was a kid 10 years ago. I entered my new Kyosho TF-7 in the GT10 class (17.5).

There would be two 5 minute qualifiers, followed by 7 minute triple A-Mains. I drew position 6 on the grid, so I would have my work cut out for me in Q1. At the tone, I got a great start, and was up to fourth place before the second lap. The car was amazing, and I worked my way up to second place a few laps later. I needed a marshal once, late in the race, but I cruised to a pretty comfortable victory, taking the TQ.

In Q2, the re-sort put me on the pole, and I had a great start. I gradually stretched out a comfortable lead, and cruised to a second round TQ, ensuring that I would start in the pole position for the triple A-Mains.

For A1, I mounted up a fresh set of tires, and it made a difference, cutting half a second off of my Q2 fast lap, and the car had much better grip everywhere. I drove mistake free, and was able to win A1. I won A2 in similar fashion, so I got to watch A3.

We would like to thank Charlie Barnes for putting on this great event, and for all the hard work he put in making it happen! We cannot wait till next year!
